With a project like Neovoxer (if there has ever been a project like Neovoxer) the challenge of insuring that every one gets due credit for their efforts can seem insurmountable.
I originally conceived of Neovoxer to be quite a small project. One shot on Super 8 film, it would include the artwork and performances of various artists I was meeting in the Boston area in an impressionistic/surrealist “quest” movie which I would screen at local art salons while performing a soundscape live.
Squeezy Easy.
This was, at the time, a way of staying creatively busy as I recuperated from the making of my first 26 minute long short film, which was an excellent film-school but not a very good film, that had taken three and a half years to complete, broken my bank, driven me to an indescribable level of physical and mental exhaustion, left me living out of the Honda civic I had “borrowed” from my parents and dropped me off unceremoniously on Boston’s doorstep at the somewhat naive behest of a comrade in arms to “Come visit”.
Just saying...
At this point I was, for all intensive purposes, functionally insane.
There is a great synchronicity found in crazy, however, if not in life itself. And while I began Neovoxer as an unrepentant exploration of my own personal creative process: One free of any responsibility to career, market or academic validation; a process that involved equal parts martial arts, sleep deprivation, alcohol, hunger and an insatiable desire to live every second of life to it’s fullest, Neovoxer quickly became much more than that.
As word of the project spread people offered more and greater resources; from cameras, film stock, and locations to talent, time and energy and before I fully understood what was happening we were slated to shoot a cast of hundreds on 35mm film funded by the meager finances afforded me by two unskilled labor jobs I had been juggling.
W. T. F.
There are certain moments in time, however, when a confluence of events occurs in such a way as to make the impossible seem inevitable. Somewhere along the way the prospect of exploring a contemporary mythology of collective creative expression touched a nerve and, with Neovoxer as the unifying force, the opportunity to give voice to that creative mythology became the myth itself.
While in film jargon one might say “Neovoxer took 7 years to make”. A more accurate description is to say Neovoxer is a Collective Creative Action taken over the course of seven years. A Creative Action taken by an ever-growing cast of people from vastly different walks of life and corners of the world tasked with the challenge of giving voice to their own role in the super-sensory story of us.
With that, the credits below are more than simply a long list of names. Each name belongs to an actual person. Each person - in turn - dedicated their time, energy, skill and talent to the Neovoxer experience.
For that I will always be grateful.
